The first part of the safari with Horizon Horseback Adventures takes you into the midst of the Waterberg mountains and staying at the Dinaka lodge. For part two, Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris in Botswana’s Tuli Block creates an unforgettable game experience for you. The “big five” are elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo. All are impressive when seen from the back of a game drive vehicle, but even more so when encountered whilst riding on horseback through the African bush. Elephant, leopard and lion can be seen in Botswana, while rhino and buffalo can be seen in the Waterberg.
The Big 5 Itinerary (subject to change due to local weather conditions)
Day 1 Arrival in Johannesburg and transfer by road to Dinaka, (approx 2 hours by road) a charming stone/ thatch safari lodge in the Waterberg.
Arrive in time to relax and look around the beautiful surroundings, meet your guides and fellow riders. After lunch you will meet your horse and enjoy a first ride in search of game.
Day 2 Your first morning ride on the Dinaka plains hopefully amongst lots of plains game. Sightings of rhino, together with many other species in your view, are not uncommon. The open plains provide great opportunities for some faster riding. Afternoon ride.
Day 3 Another early breakfast, then off and out to search for the harder to spot mountain species - mountain zebra and reedbuck, baboons, African rock python and a whole host of other things which your guide will point out to you if spotted. With a picnic lunch this is a good long day's ride, returning in time for a soak in the plunge pool and siesta.
Day 4 Another day of long canters and more game spotting.
Day 5 A last morning ride and big brunch before transferring to your next destination - on the other side of the Botswana border. You will depart the lodge just after ten and the road transfer to Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris will be just over 4 hours.
Tea and short introductory ride to get to know your beautiful new horse. Day 6 An early start and a touch of brekkie, head out from the stables to explore the Limpopo Valley. See giraffe and maybe lion - ride for about 3 - 4 hrs.
Afternoon bush walk after a well-deserved siesta. Sundowners and evening meal served as you relax into the safari rhythm.
Day 7 Today will be all about faster riding, maybe a bit of jumping if you want and hopefully a chance to see lots and lots of game, especially elephant.
Lunch, siesta, bush walk after a long morning's ride. Day 8 Another magical day on safari looking for leopard, enjoying some fast canters.
Day 9 Final ride and drive back to Jo'burg airport in time for your flight.
