Wild Horses of Namibia
Namibia not only boasts the most spectacular and varied landscapes of Africa but also magnificent herds of wild horses. They are known as the feral horses of Namibia and are mostly found and seen at Klein Aus. Klein Aus lies some 120 kilometres east of Lüderitz on the National Road B4, which connects Luederitz and Keetmanshoop - one of the most scenic routes in Namibia. This small place is on the road from Fish River Canyon to the dunes, a route taken by many tourists on self drive itineraries. It is believed they derived from escaped farm animals and German cavalry horses, which made their bid for freedom during the First World War.
They are now being threatened, as are the local gemsbok, by newly fenced off farmland, limiting their normal migration route to fresh grazing, governed by infrequent rain. At the Garub waterhole a roofed observation stand has been put up by conservationists, from where one can closely view these extraordinary animals that have adapted to the extreme desert conditions.
Garub is also the perfect stop off when driving across the dramatic landscapes of Namibia.
