Fast & Furious
These trips are for experienced riders and take guests on journeys to the best places, on the best horses, in the best most serious big game country Africa. This is not to say that the same lodge cannot accommodate less experienced riders, it is simply the ride you will be taken on that changes. The suggested lodges below can offer incredible opportunities for experienced riders - the phrase ‘fast and furious’ is not literal, the ride will go at your pace, whether that be walking or galloping across the plains. The rides are longer and go through more dramatic habitats such as Botswana’s flooded Okavango Delta and Kenya’s Masai Mara.
The horses are well bred and schooled to a high level of flatwork and some have showjumped, others may be polo ponies or ex racehorses. They require a high level of horsemanship to get the best out of them. The guides will take you jumping fallen trees, galloping in the centre of a stampede and less than 100 yards from a herd of elephant. Here we hope to offer the most exhilarating riding Africa has to offer. The rides often come face to face with lions, cheetah, hippo and hyena and guests must be able to sit to a shy and a fast gallop out of trouble. Qualifying experience for these rides may be hunting, competing, team chasing and other things which require not only a high level of horsemanship but also a good standard of fitness.

Offbeat has its base at Tristan Voorspuy’s home Deloraine, near Lake Nakuru. By 2007 there will be a polo pitch and it is also a stud. Mobile and tented safaris are run in the Masai Mara, guests travel down after the horses arrive in the Masai Mara before setting off on a ten day luxury safari for experienced riders only. More…
