African Horseback Safaris in Botswana with Ride Africa
Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris with Ride Africa
Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris with Ride Africa
Most of the rides we feature in Africa are for the more experienced rider. It is quite hard to succintly say what we mean by 'experienced', but below we hopefully describe clearly the sort of level you need to be to class yourself in this category.

We encourage you always call us before booking your holiday and let us know the sort of riding holiday you are after. We find that it is often the case that even the most experienced of rider does not wish to ride a 'tricky' horse or to ride especially fast on holiday. So, if a relaxing riding holiday is what you are looking for then tell us and we can point you in the right direction.

Experienced/Advanced Riders

We would describe an experienced or advanced rider as one who has probably ridden for many years and who is completely secure in the saddle at all paces and in most situations. They will be fully confident whilst riding a forward-going and responsive horse out in the open and over a variety of terrain. Often this type of rider is required in Africa as on many of the safaris we feature you will be riding in an area of dangerous game.

As an experienced or advanced rider at home you may ride a couple of times a week and probably have your own horse. You will be able to jump small obstacles and be completely happy riding over difficult terrain.

The horses used on many of the riding safaris are well bred and often schooled to a high level of flatwork. Some may have showjumped, others may be polo ponies or ex racehorses. They often require a good level of horsemanship to get the best out of them. Sometimes your guide will suggest jumping fallen trees, or cantering in amongst a herd of wild animals. Riding in Africa can be exhilarating and guests must be able to sit to a shy and a fast gallop out of trouble. Good experience for these rides may be hunting, competing, team chasing and other things which require not only a high level of horsemanship but also a good standard of riding fitness.

In reality, most riding safaris are conducted at a mixture of all paces. There will always be long periods at walk so that you can get close to the wildlife usually interspersed with some fast canters and gallops where the terrain allows and where the guide deems it safe.
